British Democracy at Work...kind of

Great to see the home of parliamentary democracy really upholding its fine traditions. By that I mean a Prime Minister receiving about 22% of the total electorate's vote. Only about 61% of Britons actually bothered to make the huge effort of going to the polling station to perform the hugely burdensome and onerous task of…marking a cross in a box, a right for which countless lives have been sacrificed, but never mind that. To top it all, Britain’s tyranny of the minority continues to hold sway as Labour’s take of the vote was roughly 36% of the voting electorate (the lowest ever for a victorius party) which means, for the non-mathematicians out there, almost 64% of the country do NOT want Tony Blair and Labour to govern the country (the Liberal Democrats received 22% of the vote but barely 10% of Parliamentary seats). A ringing endorsement of New Labour and another strike for democracy and fair representation in the British Isles I feel.

Did I forget to mention restricting freedom of information?

In addition to the autocratic measures listed below, Putin is now attempting to deny his people any sort of independent information resource whatsoever by applying restrictions and regulations to internet usage. Moroever, with his Stalin-esque policy of gathering all major TV channels into the state’s hands, prosecuting anyone who dares oppose him and his recently-voiced opinion that the collapse of the USSR was ‘the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the Twentieth Century’ it is certainly heart warming to see how far forward Putin has brought Russian democracy under his dictatorsh…erm, ahem, leadership, excuse me.
